It can be tough working as an art technician. There’s lots of physical work with high value objects using tools and vehicles, and plenty of opportunity for accidents - especially when the job needs to be done quickly. Not all employers are model employers when it comes to workers rights and sometimes they do not foster a tolerant, inclusive and professional workplace. Sometimes it would be good to know that you can find out what your employment rights are and have legal support should you need it. Because of all these things it can feel like you’re alone on the job and you have no option but accept that this is just how things are in the industry. Good news - you are no longer alone - there’s now support and protection for art technicians: BECTU, the media and entertainment union are now running an Art Technician branch! Do you know your employment rights? Every employer has a duty of care for the people who work for them. They must make sure you have a safe working environment at all times - and this includes both your physical and mental wellbeing. BECTU offer you support and protection We all need some help every now and again. BECTU are a trade union, and they’re experts at supporting employees in the arts industry. BECTU, along with some organised London Art Tech’s, have set up a branch for new and experienced art handlers, art technicians, fabricators and studio assistants seeking guidance, support and protection. Trade unions help workers We all know some employers are better than others. And sometimes you need support to make sure your rights are respected in the workplace. BECTU already represent workers in film, theatre and TV and can help with workplace disputes and offer legal advice and representation. The long term aim of the Art Technician branch of BECTU is to: ● Create safer workplaces by challenging employers to meet and exceed health and safety standards everywhere. ● Improve working conditions by introducing standardised Art Tech contracts - especially for freelancers. ● Promote workplace equality by encouraging workers to expect equality and supporting them in situations where it isn’t. But wait, there’s more Because film, theatre and TV are similar to our part of the art world, BECTU are also able to help out with things like; freelancing, paying tax, and discounted insurance. Yes - insurance! Why should I care about insurance? If you’re a freelancer, chances are you’re not fully covered by your employers insurance so its important to be covered for all eventualities. BECTU's group Public Liability Insurance policy provides cover for claims up to £10m. The policy extends to property loaned to and in the custody or control of members up to £25,000 per claim (subject to a maximum £100,000 per individual during the policy period). So if you’re a freelancer and you don’t have insurance - you should. Shop around to find the right insurance for you - but also check out what BECTU has to offer as well. By being a BECTU member, you get access to their discounted public liability insurance for £31.50 a year. Go to https://www.bectu.org.uk/benefits-services/pli to find out more.
