Building Crafts College is delighted to support this brand-new apprenticeship, as the only educational institution in the UK to offer this training.
This apprenticeship programme is designed to give students who are employed as museum, gallery or associated organisation based technicians the skills and knowledge necessary to be successful in a demanding and challenging sector.
The programme will develop practice related to activities such as exhibition preparation and installation, woodworking and related fabrication methods, art and artefact packing, movement and storage and environmental control together with the development of those behaviours necessary to function effectively as a team member in a dynamic workplace. These assessed elements will enable students to operate to a professional standard in many different technical environments such as art logistics. Taught by experienced and highly skilled tutors, the course will draw upon the skills, knowledge and experience of nationally recognised experts visiting from museum, gallery and art-technical sector who will ensure that learning is current and of the highest quality.
In addition, throughout the course, visits will be made to a range of museums, galleries, art handlers and exhibitions etc. The main elements of this programme are:

An introduction to artistic mediums (2D, 3D, AV & sound) and their appropriate handling.

Principles of collections and exhibitions

Health & Safety in the workplace

Collection care, installation, packing, storage, and transportation of art and objects.

Hands on practical learning of art technical skills such as installation techniques for different mediums and environments, crate making, mount-making, exhibition furniture making.

Maintaining effective and positive stakeholder and workplace relationships

Time management, decision-making and budgetary control

Managing the work environment, including the safe and correct use of tools, equipment and materials

Displaying appropriate behaviours as required by the standard

End Point Assessment (EPA) as required by the standard and delivered by the End Point Assessment Organisation (EPAO)

In addition, apprentices may enrol onto evening and short courses in subjects such as carpentry, wood carving and stone carving.
The programme is delivered on a block release to attend college basis. There are 11 blocks and each block is one week in length. These are followed by a programme end point assessment. The programme length will vary according to individual progress but will typically be about 18 months from start to completion of the end point assessment. A summary of the content of modules is shown below which will be informed by site visits appropriate to the topic.
Entry requirements will depend on the criteria set by employing organisations but typically will be a good basic IT Skills and English and maths GCSE at grade 4 or above.
Apprentices who have not previously achieved the necessary level at English or maths will be required to successfully complete functional skills qualifications during the course of the apprenticeship and before taking the end point assessment.
Graduates from the apprenticeship can progress into established employment in the museum and gallery sector and supervisory roles and may follow a pathway into an appropriate level 4 programme.
